INTRODUCTION: Intraoperative frozen section histological examination is a rapid technique of frozen sectioning and monochrome staining of a tissue fragment, to immediately determine its histological nature by microscopic analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of frozen section examination by comparing its results with the results of the definitive histological examination. Determine the contribution of extemporaneous examination in the management of patients. And finally Indicate the main problems encountered during the extemporaneous examination.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective and descriptive study which made it possible to list 47 cases of extemporaneous examinations carried out in the ACP department of HOGIP in Dakar from January 2014 to January 2020.

RESULTS: The percentage of extemporaneous examinations compared to histological studies carried out during the same period in the department was 0.12. The average age was 49 years with extremes of 16 and 79 years. The sex ratio was 1.04 or 24 men against 23 women. Specimens for frozen section came from FANN's CTCV service in 53% of cases. The lung was the main organ removed in 51% or 24 cases. The results of the extemporaneous histological examination and the definitive histology were concordant in 94% of the cases, The extemporaneous examination concerned 34 tumoral lesions or 72% of which 27 were malignant after confirmation with histology by standard technique, 7 were benign , 13 lesions were inflammatory in nature, including 7 tuberculoid granulomas and one cystic lesion.

CONCLUSION: This study shows that there is a considerable contribution of frozen section examination in the care of patients, especially in thoracic surgery, to avoid two-stage surgery
