Introduction : Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) remains both an endemic and epidemic condition in Senegal. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological aspects , clinical manifestations, and therapeutic approaches of CL cases managed at the Social Hygiene Institute (IHS) Hospital in Dakar.
Materials and Methods : We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study over an 11-year period (January 2014 to December 2024) in the Dermatology Department of the IHS Hospital.
Results : A total of 62 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis were recorded. The mean patient age was 32 years, with a sex ratio of 1.07. Among the 60 Senegalese patients, geographic origins were as follows: Dakar (55%, n=33), Matam (20%, n=12), Tambacounda (8.33%, n=5), Thiès and Diourbel (5% each, n=3), Kolda (3.3%, n=2), and Fatick and Saint-Louis (one case each). Of the Dakar residents, 48.5% (n=16) had no history of travel outside the region. Additionally, one patient was Guinean and another Mauritanian. Pruritus was the most common symptom, reported in 54.84% (n=34), and was associated with pain in 20.9% (n=13). The main clinical presentations were: ulcerocrusted lesions in 88.7% (n=55), sporotrichoid pattern in 20.97% (n=13), ulcerated and superinfected lesions in 12.9% (n=8), pure and diffuse ulcerative forms in 4.84% (n=3) each, ulcerovegetative form in 3.23% (n=2), and a single pseudo-lepromatous case. Treatment was primarily based on oral fluconazole (70% of cases). Clinical cure was achieved in 95.16% of patients, with one death reported.
Conclusion : Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in Senegal, with Dakar representing a confirmed and increasingly significant transmission area. The ulcerocrusted form remains the most prevalent, although the sporotrichoid presentation appears to be rising in frequency.
